Assessment Committees for Defenses (Master’s and Ph.D.) and Ph.D. Qualifiers.

The requirements and criteria used by the Doctoral Thesis Review and Reporting Committee to analyze the nominations for the committees and reports are as follows.

According to the UFSC postgraduate regulations (Normative Resolution 154/2021/CUn, Art. 71) and the Internal Regulations of PosAutomação/2022, the requirements are:

  • The master’s committee will be composed of the president (advisor or co-advisor) and at least two full examining members, at least one of whom must be external to the Program; and
  • The doctoral committee will be composed of the president (advisor or co-advisor) and at least three full examining members, at least one of whom must be external to UFSC.

About the Doctoral Qualification Exam (Normative Resolution 154/2021/CUn):

  • The doctoral qualification examination committee must be composed of at least three members, with at least one member from PosAutomação and one from outside UFSC.
  • The chairmanship of the defense or qualification committee must be exercised by the advisor or co-advisor, responsible for conducting the work and, in cases of a tie, for exercising the deciding vote.

Aboute the Qualification of the Master’s Project (Normative Instruction 6/PosAutomação/2024):

  • The examination committee for the qualification of the master’s project must be composed of two members: I — advisor or co-advisor; II — member with at least a master’s degree and invited by the advisor.

The recommendations below aim to clarify some points that should be taken into account when forming committees and indicating rapporteurs. It should be noted that, according to the rules, Master’s examination committees must have at least three members with a PhD, one of whom must be external to PosAutomação, and for Doctoral examination committees, at least three members, one of whom must be external to UFSC. Also according to the rules, in exceptional cases, in addition to the minimum number, and at the discretion of the delegated collegiate body, a person with recognized knowledge in the specific area, without a formal degree, may be accepted to be part of the examination committees.

In addition to the rules requirements, the committee will take into account the following recommendations when judging the requests for examination committees.

1)    External Reviewer for Ph.D. Dissertation

a) Experience in supervising doctoral students;

b) Recent relevant production (last 5 years) in the area;

c) Not having a close relationship with the supervisor and student, that is, not being a recent co-author (last 5 years), not having been a supervisor of the student’s previous work, nor having been a former supervisor of the applicant;

d) Being a professor external to UFSC.

2)    Ph.D. Assessment Committee

The majority of the committee members should meet the criteria established above in 1a, 1b, and 1c.

3)   Ph.D. Qualifying Committee

The majority of the committee members should meet the conditions established in 1a and 1b. Besides, there must not be majority (same number allowed)) of members close to the advisor or candidate. The notion of proximity is the same of item 1c.

4)    Master’s Assessment Committee

The majority of the committee members should have experience in advising Master’s dissertations and meet the condition 1b. Further, there cannot be majority (same number allowed) of members related to the advisor or candidate. The notion of relationship is established by item 1c.
