Palestra: Computational Science and Engineering, a Radical Epistemic Rupture

Na quarta-feira, dia 15/abril, as 14:30 horas, na sala PPGEAS 02 (térreo), teremos a palestra do pesquisador Malik Ghallab (LASS-CNRS, Toulouse, França) sob o título:

Computational science and engineering, a radical epistemic rupture

Segue abaixo uma breve apresentação do pesquisador e um resumo da palestra.

Short Bio:

Malik Ghallab is a senior research scientist at LAAS-CNRS, University of Toulouse. His research activity is mainly focused on planning, acting and learning in Robotics and AI. He contributed to topics such as object recognition and pattern matching, scene interpretation, heuristics search, unification algorithms, knowledge compiling, temporal reasoning, planning, monitoring, and learning of robots skills and models of behaviors.

Abstract:

Computational science and engineering result for the convergence of the following three powerful investigation and knowledge engines. These are new sets of conceptual and practical instruments for stating, formalizing and solving problems, which dramatically amplified our means for understanding and acting in the world:

• Computational models, simulation, and high performance computing;

• Sensing, instrumentation, imaging, swarms of communicating sensors;

• Processing, visualization and storage of massive data, from sensors and simulations, together with search, mining, and machine learning techniques to integrate signals into meaningful data, then into new knowledge.

The convergence of these three investigation engines, their exceptional capabilities of integration, of composition from elementary components into complex models and systems, of networking and dissemination at scales undreamed of until now have revolutionized all fields of knowledge and engineering. These approaches are deeply changing the epistemic foundations as well as the conceptual and practical apparatus of scientists and engineers. They allow to observe, experiment widely in-silico, acquire, visualize and process massive data, to represent and abstract these observations into meaningful relations and models, to prototype virtually, design artifacts and make decisions. The talk presents this three ingredients of computational science and engineering and illustrates their impacts and new perspectives.

Title: Scalable State-Machine Replication

Abstract:

State-machine replication (SMR) is a well-known fault-tolerance technique. SMR consists of sequencing client requests and executing them against replicas in the same order; thanks to deterministic execution, every replica reaches the same state after executing the same sequence of requests. Despite its simple execution model, SMR does not scale performance: since every replica added to the system needs to execute all requests, throughput does not improve with the number of replicas.

In this talk, I will present Scalable SMR (S-SMR), a technique that extends state-machine replication to scale (a) with the number of replicas (scale out) and (b) with the number of processors in a replica (scale up). I will also describe Eyrie, a library in Java that implements S-SMR, and Volery, an application that implements Zookeeper’s API. We assessed the performance of Volery and compared the results to Zookeeper.
